The SAMBOX initiative is an opioid recovery harm reduction initiative that brings together the awareness of the Massachusetts Good SAMaritan Law and Overdose Assistance Law with the use of an opioid response rescue kit (Naloxbox).

What is the SAMBOX Initiative?

A Statewide Public Health initiative that serves as an opioid harm reduction program together with an Education and Awareness campaign of the Good SAMaritan Law and Overdose Medical Assistance Immunity Laws.  The initiative promotes communities and businesses place rescue BOXes, called SAMBOXes, across their city or town in strategic locations across the entire Commonwealth.  These opioid response rescue kits are designed to contain Naloxone (a.k.a. Narcan), CPR rescue breathing barriers and gloves,  and directions for administering Narcan.

Provide a collective societal benefit and program in addressing a National Public Health Epidemic.

Awareness of the Law

Promote and increase awareness of the Massachusetts Good Samaritan Law (Part III,Title IV, Chapter 258C, Section 13) and Overdose Assistance Immunity Law (Massachusetts General Laws – Part I,Title XV, Chapter 94C, Section 34A)

Public Health Participation

Encourage Health Departments to participate in the State of Massachusetts Community Naloxone Purchasing Program (CNPP) and collaborate with the MA Medical Reserve Corp (when warranted) to manage SAMBOX Supplies.

Essential Measures

Alignment with the Massachusetts Health Officers Association Local Public Health Toolkit for Addressing the Opioid Epidemic (Essential Measure 3, 4, 5, 7, 9).

Proper Funding

Utilize the Proper and Intended use of Attorney General's Opioid Settlement Funds through intended role of Municipalities regarding opioid use disorder.
